HISTORY

Georgia is famous of its exquisite beauty ringed by the Caucasus Mountains and set at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Georgia is located between the Black and Caspian Seas. It once served as one of the main trade routes for the famous ancient Silk Road. Georgia was one of the first countries, where the Apostles Simon and Andrew preached Christianity in the 1st century, while conversion of Georgia is credited to a young woman St. Nino of Cappadocia.

The Georgian alphabet is among 14 existing alphabets in the world. The first translation of the Bible into Georgian dates back to the fifth century. Scholars compare the 12th century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli to Dante and Shakespeare.

From ancient times, Georgians have been renowned for their hospitality, traditions and culture. Ancient Greeks knew Georgia as the Land of the Golden Fleece and the myth about the Argonauts. The country is considered the cradle of wine with the oldest remains of winemaking being found here.

Georgian cuisine is very unique to the country. Each part of Georgia has its own distinct culinary tradition. Georgian feast is a pretty big deal. Everyone in the country takes eating, drinking, and having fun very seriously.

The importance of both food and drink to Georgian culture is best observed during a feast called supra, when a huge assortment of dishes are prepared, always accompanied by large amounts of local wine, known to be one of the world's oldest wines, produced in ancient authentic Georgian underground kvevri clay pots (dating 8 century BC). In a Georgian feast, the role of the tamada (toastmaster) is an important and honoured position.
